Grandma’s Pulled Pork

The more recipes I share with you, the more I realize what makes a recipe important to me. Sure, it has to have certain elements like a degree of simplicity and adjustable flavors to suit a (picky) crowd, but almost every recipe that I return to has a much deeper connection. It’s strange for me to think about…but I tie a lot of emotion into food. And I can trace my favorite recipes to people who’ve impacted my life in one way or another. I can tie them to different times and phases in my life. I realize that when I bring these recipes back, I can nearly remember exactly when I first tried the food. So, straight out of my childhood, I bring to you my late Grandma Weezie’s Pulled Pork.

Reheat Instructions: Pulled pork freezes well! If you have extra or make a large batch, you can freeze it easily. To reheat, just thaw or place frozen pulled pork back into crock pot and cook on low 6-8 hours or high for 3-4 hours.

Ingredients

  • 1 large pork roast
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • Spray oil
  • 1 cup catsup (Yes, “catsup”)
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 bottle any BBQ sauce
  • 1 tbsp mustard
  • 12 Hawaiian Rolls
  • Fries or Kettle Chips for a side

Directions

  1. Spray Crock Pot with spray oil and place roast and onion with 2 tbsp water in it. Cook on low for 6 hours.
  2. After 6 hours, check to see if it’s tender by sticking a fork into the roast and attempting to pull a section of meat. When it’s ready and tender, put roast on a cutting board and pull apart with 2 forks.
  3. Meanwhile, in Crock put: 1 cup catsup, 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce, 1/2 bottle any BBQ sauce, 1 tbsp mustard.
  4. Stir well, add pork, mix, and heat another hour.
  5. Warm the Hawaiian rolls in the oven, add pork to rolls, and serve.
